Location

IGRMS, the national museum of mankind, is located at Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh in the central province of India. The Museum is situated between 77O  25’ E longitude, 23O 16’ N latitude at a height of 1900 ft. above sea level.

By Air - Bhopal is air-linked with flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Indore

By Rail - Being located in central India, Bhopal is directly connected to major metro-cities of India like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and other tourist centre’s by rail

Visiting hours: March to August 11.00 to 18.30 and September to Feb 10.00 to 17.30.

Opens on : Every day except Mondays and National Holidays.

Entrance Fee

Entry Ticket :10/- for adults and 5/- for children. Free Entry for children upto 12 years of age and students having I-cards. 50% discount on ticket fee is allowed to Group Visitors  representing recognized  educational Institutions on certain conditions.

Brief Introduction about IGRMS - Manav Sangrahalaya (National Museum of Mankind)

Situated in the 200 acres of picturesque site at Shamla Hills overlooking Upper lake of Bhopal the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya is the largest open air anthropological museum in India. Established in 1977 this museum depicts the story of mankind in time and space through its open air and indoor exhibitions. The open air exhibitions consisting of Tribal Habitat, Coastal Village, Desert Village, Himalayan Village, Mythological Trail and Traditional Technology are constructed by the concerning ethnic groups using raw materials brought from respective localities. These exhibitions gives a good glimpse of richness and diversity of traditional architectural heritage of India and knowledge system associated with it. It has the unique distinction of having pre-historic rock paintings within its own premises which is developed as open air exhibition by developing pathways and by providing informative labels. The Veethi Sankul, the indoor museum building having 13 galleries on various topics related to the human biological and cultural evolution and variation is also an attraction for the visitors.

Other than this periodical exhibitions, performing art presentations, artist workshops and education programs etc are the regular feature of this museum. The museum also has rich visitor facilities of eateries, museum shop and guide.

It also has a regional centre situated in South India at Mysore functioning from a historical building Wellington Lodge and a Culture Interpretation Centre at Majuli, Assam.
