The Begums
in Bhopal always maintained a colonial loyalty to the British Empire. In
the process, many buildings and civil constructions were named or dedicated
to the British royal family. The Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal was constructed
by Shah Jahan Begum (1868 – 1901) and named ‘Prince of Wales Hospital’.
Till date it remains one of the most occupied government hospital in the city.
Post independence, Kasturba Gandhi Medical College was set up where
faehgarh fort once existed, very close to the Hamidia Hospital.
The hospital
building has a royal design with domes in each corner. The main porch is
square in shape and the terrace is adorned by a three storied clock tower,
largely European in architecture. The ground floor has arched doors, and
Rajputana balconies on the ground floor that give a fusion of east west to
the architectural beauty of the building.
